Funkadelic Food Truck is one of the newer additions to the Jacksonville food truck lineup. They had their grand opening back in December of 2013 and have been steadily gaining popularity among food truck fans ever since. After giving them a try today, it’s easy to see why.
First of all, the bright, colorful truck is just plain fun. The bold paint job definitely reflects the owner’s love of art, music, and all things funky. And the neon colors make this food truck hard to miss. We caught up with them today at the Academy Sports parking lot at Kernan and Atlantic. This is becoming a popular spot for food trucks to set up camp for lunch on Saturdays, so keep an eye out for some of your favorites here.
We were greeted with friendly, personable service at the window.
We placed our order and waited for our food. And waited. And waited. There really wasn’t that long of a line at the truck…just a handful of people. But the food just seemed to be taking a little too long. Luckily, the food was worth the wait! Everything we tried was great. The food was all a little spicier than I had expected, but really flavorful and unique. Here’s the breakdown of what we tried:
First up was the Shrimp Sliders (3 for $8.50). The shrimp were juicy and plump with a crisp panko crust. They were topped with bacon, avocado, and sriracha slaw and then drizzled with what they call “Funk Sauce.” I don’t know what they put in that sauce, but it sure is good. All of that inside a Hawaiian sweet roll…what a great combination of flavors!
The Marinated Portobello Sandwich ($9.00) was another winner. The mushroom itself was so incredibly flavorful and the fact that it was cut into smaller chunks (as opposed to a whole portobello) made it easier to eat. The goat cheese added nice tang and creaminess and the peppery arugula was a good touch. Then came more of that yummy Funk Sauce, which added even more flavor and a bit of heat. This was all sandwiched between two slices of buttery, toasty bread.
Along with our sandwiches, we ordered a small side of Cajun Fries ($2.00), which were decent. The fries themselves were nothing special…just your standard French fries. But the spicy seasoning on the fries added lots of flavor and the homemade ranch dressing that came with them was awesome. Really creamy and rich…it was a nice complement to all the spice the rest of our food had.
If you’re looking for comforting food with an interesting twist and a side of funk, look no further. Funkadelic Food Truck offers up plenty of fun and tasty options. Be on the lookout for this cool new food truck next time you’re out and about. Just look for the neon green truck with the saxophone-playing octopus.
